the area as a result of the persistent rain fall and commercial
activities has been slowed down. The Road connects the Benin Sapele Road

enormous, apart from the economic importance as it links two markets
together, the 3rd market and the Popular Santana market, it will also
reduce the much dreaded traffic in sapele road in the morning and

Police Arrest Man Who Flogged His Wife’s Niece For Using Air Conditioner (Photos)
A 27-year-old beautician, Latifat Adeyemi, has been battered by her aunt’s husband, Rasak Alabi, aka Alfa, for allegedly turning on an air conditioner in their house in Solebo, Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Alabi reportedly claimed that the gadget consumed excessive power, and allegedly hit the victim with a spanner in the face and flogged her with a piece of cable, which led to her admission in a private hospital.
PUNCH Metro was told that for the past 10 years, Latifat and her grandma had been living in a bungalow at the back of the house on Ile Eye Street, which was reportedly built by Alabi’s wife.
It was learnt that Alabi, who had separated from his wife for the past 20 years, moved into the building in 2015 after reconciling with his wife, a nurse, who is based in the United States of America.
Our correspondent was told that since Alabi moved into the house, there had been misunderstandings, which had led to the eviction of some relatives in the house.
Latifat said she was staying in the house because she had to cater to her grandma.
She said, “My aunt is a nurse and she is based in the US. She put her mother in the house and asked me to cater to her. Grandma and I had been living in that house for over 10 years.
“Alfa (Alabi) and my aunt separated over 20 years ago. They never had a child together. But last year, they reconciled and the family said we needed a man in the house; so he moved into the house. He evicted our last born, but I stayed behind because of grandma.
“Last week Friday, when I returned from Surulere around 7pm, I saw that he had broken into my apartment and removed the AC there. He said the AC consumed too much power.
“I made a call to my uncle and I told him that I would be packing out of the house because I was fed up. As I turned around, he hit me in the eye severally with a spanner and as I ran off, he picked a cable piece and flogged me.”
She said she went to the Ipakodo Police Station to report the incident, adding that operatives who followed her to the house met the gate locked.
Latifat said the police turned back when they could not gain entrance.
Her half-sister, Rasheedat, said there had been disagreement between Alabi and Rashidat in the past, adding that the AC was only an excuse for the suspect to chase her out of the house.
“This is the only girl left in that house because of grandma. He had been finding excuses to send her away,” she explained.
Raheedat said shortly after the incident, Alabi reported to a vigilance group, Onyabo, that his car had been vandalised by Latifat’s siblings.
He was also alleged to have later gone to the Igbogbo Police Station to make other accusations.
Raheedat said the police called for a peace meeting between the parties, but the suspect rejected the move and ejected the grandma from the house.
“The old woman, who had left her husband’s house for the past 30 years, had returned to the same place again,” she added.
Alabi’s phone rang out many times when our correspondent called him.
He had yet to respond to a text message sent to his phone on Saturday.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been declared wanted by the police.
“The suspect is evading arrest, but we will get him,” she added.
UPDATE
The Lagos State Police Command has just arrested Mr. Rasak Alabi, the man who allegedly battered his wife’s niece, Latifat Adeyemi, in Ikorodu for using air conditioner.
Our correspondent had reported that Alabi hit Adeyemi with a spanner and whipped her with a piece of cable last Friday.
The victim had been admitted in a hospital.
After the report, the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, was said to have ordered the arrest of the suspect.
“The CP took up the matter and ordered that he should be fished out. He was arrested in his hideout in Ikorodu around 1.30pm. He struggled with the officials, but he has been arrested and the case transferred to the command headquarters. He will face charges if found culpable,” the police spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos said.
Ogun Farm Manager Strangled While Harvesting Crop With Daughter (Disturbing Pic)
A farm manager, Gbenga Kiki, has been strangled by unknown persons while harvesting crop on a farmland in Orisada-Eyo community in the Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that 37-year-old Gbenga, a father of two, who managed the farm for his boss, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was killed penultimate Sunday, while harvesting tomatoes.
It was learnt that the farm manager had left for the farm on his motorcycle around 12pm.
Our correspondent gathered that Gbenga went with his nine-year-old daughter.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the family members became apprehensive when Gbenga failed to return.
His daughter was found at a junction some hours later, and was taken home by a Good Samaritan.
Gbenga’s corpse was reportedly discovered on Thursday on the farmland by some members of a vigilance group, with some signs of violence.
Our correspondent learnt that the matter was reported at the Owode Police Division, while two suspects were arrested.
The deceased’s mother, Celina Kiki, told our correspondent that Gbenga had left for the farm to harvest some tomatoes for Sallah.
She said, “It was around 12pm on Sunday. I prepared food for him and asked him to eat before going to the farm as he had much work to do. He insisted on going, adding that he would return to eat as he was not going to stay long. He went on his motorcycle.
“He said I should keep the food for him. When it was, however, getting late, I became worried that he had not returned. Minutes later, I saw a man riding his motorcycle home. The man brought back Gbenga’s daughter. I was shocked and knew that something bad had happened. The girl could not explain anything.
The attackers must have dropped her at a junction while they went to carry out their wicked act.
“We kept on searching for Gbenga until Thursday when his corpse was found on the farmland. We do not know who killed him. I am still in pains.”
A community leader, who identified himself only as Odebiyi, urged the police to be thorough in their investigation.
He said, “The two suspects arrested should be quizzed thoroughly by the police. They may have useful information about the case. One of them is known as Dauda. He was a former manager of the farmland where Gbenga worked.”
A resident told PUNCH Metro that Gbenga usually did not work on Sunday, adding that the killers were suspected to have called him on the telephone to come and sell tomatoes to them.
“I saw his corpse. He was strangled and his corpse was dumped in the bush around the farmland,” he added.
The head of the vigilance group in the community, Gafar Raji, said the police should strengthen security in the area, adding that the community had not been attacked by gunmen in the past.
The Ogun State acting Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the police were investigating if there was a foul play in Gbenga’s death.
He said, “The matter was initially reported as a case of missing person. But when the corpse was eventually found in a bush, no mark of violence was discovered on him. The owner of the farm and another person were invited for questioning. The police will still investigate if there was any foul play in the death.”

Man Abandons Wife In Hospital Over Inability To Pay N520,000 Hospital Bill
A woman has cried out for help from charitable Nigerians since her
husband abandoned her in a hospital four months ago because he could not
pay the medical bill of over N520,000.
The 39-year old mother of seven, Mrs. Uzoamaka Onu, who had a cancer operation is currently stuck in the New Mayor Hospital and Fertility Centre, Nkpor in Anambra due to none payment of the bill.
Report from the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, said Mrs. Onu, a food vendor from Okpoto community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi, could not get in touch with her husband after several attempt for four months, hence the conclusion that the man has abandoned her to fate.
Here’s her full story:
“My husband stopped visiting the hospital after I successfully underwent a surgery on my right breast.
“Though I do not blame him for absconding because he had suffered a lot since 2013 when signs of cancer started manifesting.
“He (my husband) sells rat poison and cannot afford the money to pay the balance and I think that is why he has run away.
My problem started in 2013 when I started experiencing excruciating pain in my body, specifically in my lungs. I started visiting patent medicine stores for solution, but unfortunately that compounded my problems.
“However, it was on the advice of some friends and family members that I decided to visit General Hospital, Abakiliki where I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I am appealing to good spirited Nigerians to come to my aid and help me to get back home.”
In her quest to regain her health, Uzoamaka had visited the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for solution.
The rendezvous finally brought her to New Mayor Hospital and Fertility Centre where she had a successful surgery, leading to outright removal of her right breast.
“The total bill charged by the hospital management for the surgery was N750,000 but my family managed to pay N230,000, leaving the outstanding balance.”
Mrs. Onu’s predicament was confirmed by the hospitals medical director, Dr. Ben Ossai who described the her situation as extremely sympathetic.
According the doctor, her right breast was in a deteriorating state and was emitting offensive odour due to the devastation the ailment had caused, hence the necessity to surgically remove the affected breast.
Ossai continued:
“The patient underwent a successful surgery and had long been discharged pending when her family would pay the balance of her medical bill. But for four months now, her husband has not visited and we suspected he has absconded.”

Nine months after, boy who drank acid in Ogun school dies
Three-year-old Darasimi Ogunwunmi, a
Kindergarten One pupil, who drank caustic soda left carelessly around
his classroom by teachers of his private school, Fahsal Children’s
School, Ilupeju Estate, Idiroko, Ogun State in November 2015, has died.
After nine months of agony, being unable
to swallow either liquid or solid food and six different surgeries at
the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Darasimi succumbed to his
injuries few days after his last surgical operation on Monday, September
12.
The last surgery was another attempt to
open up the boy’s stomach and throat which had become damaged by the
chemical, which he drank when he was thirsty in school.
For Darasimi, the last days of his short life were spent in a condition his mother, Toyin, described as a living hell.
Toyin told Punch
“My son would have died long ago if not because of the money that kind Nigerians raised for his treatment. The money financed his surgeries and rehabilitation since that time.“If I knew he had no chance of survival, I would have prayed that God should give him rest long ago because my son suffered for every day he lived after that incident. Every day, I saw him lying in the hospital bed or sitting at home struggling to drink ordinary water with pain, I cried bitterly.”
Saturday PUNCH had exclusively
reported in January and February how the proprietor of Fahsal, Mrs.
Fausat Abubakar, allegedly introduced soap making business on the school
premises.
But rather than remove the production
far from the reach of her pupils, the boy’s parents alleged that the
soap was being produced right beside the classrooms.
On November 19, 2015, the worse happened
when Darasimi became thirsty and his teachers turned a deaf ear to his
incessant cry for water.
Part of the caustic soda already mixed and allegedly left around was what Darasimi drank from.
His teachers only realised what had
happened when the boy was found outside his classroom crying and
bleeding from the mouth, it was learnt.
The teachers applied palm oil to the boy’s mouth but rushed him to the hospital when they realised his case was critical.
After Saturday PUNCH’s story,
the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, said that
she had constituted a team to investigate the case.
But the family explained that nothing had been done about bringing the proprietor of their son’s school to justice.
Punch correspondent contacted the
commissioner on Thursday to ask if anything was ever done about the
boy’s case and what the outcome of the state’s investigation was.
“There was a full investigation. But because there was no hard evidence, it became difficult to take the issue up legally. We combed the premises of the school and nothing was found, probably because time had elapsed and the school might have cleaned up,” Mujota said.
When finally told Mrs. Mujota that the boy was dead, she expressed surprise and said “we were not informed.”
She also said after our initial reports, the state government team had visited the family twice.
“If they say we did not visit, between when and when are they talking about? We have pictures as evidence of our team’s visit to the child and his mother. There were allegations from the school proprietor that the boy’s parents were trying to extort her. We went to verify the claim.”

Why I Dumped My One-Day-Old Baby - Mother (photo)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Ifunanya Eme for allegedly dumping her one- day- old baby girl in the bush.
Ifunanya, aged 31, and a single mother, claimed she dropped the baby to die in the bush as she had no means of feeding her.
“The man responsible for the pregnancy denied me. I was staying in Ajah, a Lagos suburb, but relocated to Ajamgbadi where I was offered a job in a factory. When I thought about losing the job, I made up my mind to dump the baby that has already put me in problem.
“The baby is a child of destiny because, I did not go for ante-natal throughout the pregnancy. The day I was in labour, I did not seek assistance from anybody. I went to the bush with a knife. I delivered myself of the baby and I used it to cut the placenta. In fact, I made up my mind that I must do away with the baby. I don’t want to be embarrassed in future by the baby who would ask of her father.
“The only thing I know is that the man who is responsible for the pregnancy told me he was traveling. Since that day till now, the phone number he gave me can’t be reached, she said.
A police officer who doesn’t want to be named said the baby was discovered by a passer-by who heard her crying and reported to the police.
He said the trace of blood was trailed to the a house, where the woman was found.
Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the command has taken custody of the baby.
He said, “the baby was seen by the eagle eye the patrol team from Ajamgbadi Division. They picked up the baby during investigation, they were able to trace the mother. “The baby was taken to the hospital for examination and we will do the needful by sending her to the appropriate government agency for rehabilitation.”

How A Computer Science Undergraduate Defrauded 7 Ladies On Facebook In Lagos (Photo)
The police in Lagos State have arrested a 26-year-old undergraduate, Ademola Adebayo, for allegedly defrauding seven ladies he met on Facebook.
Our correspondent learnt that Adebayo, a 400-Level student of Computer Science, allegedly lured the ladies by uploading some rich pictures on Facebook, and asking his victims to meet him at a location, usually a hotel on the pretext that he had deals for them.
PUNCH Metro gathered that when the ladies showed up at the agreed location, the suspect would dispose them of their phones and other valuables.
The police alleged that Adebayo worked with an accomplice, 35-year-old Toheeb Fetuga, who had also been arrested.
It was learnt that the suspect was arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, where one of the victims reported the matter.
Adebayo told PUNCH Metro that he had defrauded seven ladies of their valuables.
He said, “One of the ladies I defrauded was Rita. She came to a hotel in the Oyingbo area. We had met on Facebook and I agreed to do a deal with her. She was a woman willing to have a sexual affair with me for money.
“I invited her to the hotel and asked how much she would take. She said $1,000, and I said it was okay. I collected her phone. I asked her to come for the money at a hotel in the Victoria Island area. So, she believed me and left.
“I checked the contacts on her phone and that was where I got the contacts of other ladies I defrauded. I was trying to lure another friend of hers when I was arrested. I have done it to seven ladies. I usually meet the young women on Facebook, and it is either I add them or they add me.
“I usually uploaded rich pictures on Facebook, which attracted them to me. Fetuga was the one I usually gave the valuables to sell. He sold each of the phones for N6,000.”
Fetuga, on the other hand, said although Adebayo brought the phones to him, the undergraduate lied to him that the owners were badly in need of money.
He said, “He came to me that he wanted to sell the phones. When I asked him where he got the phones from, he said some ladies in his school were in need of money to complete their projects and examinations.
“He had come about seven times and I gave him about N6,000 for each of the phones. We usually met at different places. He would call and say we should transact business.”
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said investigations were ongoing into the matter.

Resident Doctors May Begin Strike Nationwide September 30
The National Association of Resident Doctors has asked the federal and state governments to resolve all outstanding issues in the health sector before September 30 or face an industrial action by its members.
The newly-elected President of the association, Dr. John Onyebueze, announced the ultimatum at the end of NARD’s 26th Annual General Meeting in Enugu.
The resident doctors flayed government at all levels over what it described as the poor state of health care delivery in the country.
Onyebueze, who addressed journalists at the end of the meeting, said the current state of public health care delivery in the country was ‘pitiable.’
Demanding an immediate implementation of pending agreements reached between the government and health workers, he declared that the association “cannot guarantee industrial harmony in the health sector if this persists beyond the payment of September salaries.”
Onyebueze said the association was demanding an immediate upgrade of infrastructure in teaching hospitals, urgent action against poliomyelitis and Lassa fever, as well as the immediate release and implementation of the report on the residency training programme.
He added that the association was unhappy with the disruption of the structure of the residency programme by the chief medical directors of teaching hospitals.
Listing the grievances of the resident doctors, he added, “Are you talking about the rickety beds in the accident and emergency wards?
“We do not even have gloves and emergency tools. We do not have pens to write and make prescriptions. We are saying that this thing must not continue.”
Continuing, Onyebueze said only the implementation of outstanding agreements would forestall an industrial action by resident doctors across the country.
“The Federal Government should expedite action on the release of the bailout funds for the state tertiary health institutions as agreed earlier.
“The Federal Government should, as a matter of urgency, ensure the migration of all our members to the IPPIS platform.
“Centres that are not deducting pension contributions from our members should immediately commence, while all centres should ensure full remittance of deducted contributions of our members to the pension fund administrators.”
The association said it did not agree with the ‘no work, no pay’ rule canvassed by the government during industrial actions.
“In line with extant labour laws, we reject in its entirety the ‘no work no pay’ rule as currently being applied by the Federal Ministry of Health,” Onyebueze said.
He condemned what he described as the “unjust sacking of doctors.”
